Anaheim Election Day Guide: Polls Open 7 A.M. to 8 P.M. Tuesday (Anaheim Grove News)

California voters in Anaheim head into Election Day, Tuesday, November 3, with more ways to vote than at any point in the state's history, and the key is choosing one before the evening rush. Polls and vote centers are open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Pacific Time. The Orange County Registrar of Voters operates vote centers across the county, including locations in Anaheim, where any county voter can cast a ballot regardless of their home precinct.

Every active registered voter in California was mailed a ballot for this election, so most Anaheim households have already handled their vote-by-mail envelope. A mail ballot counts if it is postmarked by November 3 and received within seven days, or it can be hand-delivered to a vote center, polling place or the county elections office by 8 p.m. on Election Day. Secure drop boxes provided by the Registrar offer a third route for voters who prefer not to use the mail.

Forgot to register, moved within the county or found an error in your registration? California offers conditional, or same-day, registration through Election Day at vote centers and county elections offices, allowing eligible voters to register and cast a conditional ballot that is counted once eligibility is verified. Most voters do not need to show photo identification; the exception is some first-time voters who registered by mail, who may be asked for identification under federal rules.

The top of the California ballot features an open race for governor between Xavier Becerra, a Democrat, and Steve Hilton, a Republican, leading a statewide slate that also includes 14 statewide propositions, Propositions 1 through 5 and 37 through 45. Among them, Proposition 39 would require government-issued identification to vote, and Proposition 37 proposes a middle-income homebuyer loan program backed by up to 25 billion dollars in revenue bonds. Reviewing the state's voter information guide in advance will shorten any visit considerably.

Tonight, Anaheim voters can help themselves with three quick steps: find your nearest vote center on the Registrar of Voters website, decide whether to deliver your mailed ballot or vote in person, and plan to arrive before the after-work peak. If you are in line when polls close at 8 p.m., stay in line. However you cast it, a ballot planned tonight is a ballot counted this week.
